Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson: music is an intimate dialogue

Pete Yorn suffered from a break-up that didn't let him sleep for an entire week. And when he finally could sleep again, he had a dream. This dream consisted of eight new songs. "The whole record was in my head, fully formed", recalls Yorn. He felt he had to make a record in the style of Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot. "I felt it had to be a guy-and-girl conceptual, so I asked myself: who is Brigitte Bardot today? It's Scarlett Johansson". So he called her, and together recorded Break up (2009). To be honest with you, this album has been quite an outstanding surprise for me. I didn't like Scarlett's first musical effort -an album containing songs of Tom Waits. But as soon as I knew that this new record included singer/songwriter Pete Yorn's original material, I knew that I was going to approach a different type of work. Break up, more than a collection of duets, pays tribute to one of the most intrinsic attributes of music: dialogue. When music like this speaks to you and reaches you, you can't do but listen to it carefully and answer to it with your emotions. Break up is one of the most intimate & heartfelt conservations I've listened to this year.
