Nneka: singing to a world of her own

to Estrella *

Nneka has been compared to Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill and India.Arie. Reading that phrase on several magazines, websites and papers was good enough for me to try and listen to her music. The thing is, those comparisons might work well as an invitation, but fall short as a definition. When you get to listen to Concrete jungle (2010), you're about to embark into a unique proposal. Her songs can be seen as mediums through which she reflects on social issues. It actually doesn't matter if she does that while singing or rapping -she excels at both, indeed. She has just embraced music as her form of expression. Her voice is, at the same time, enchanting, catchy and provoking. This is great music, but first and foremost, it's a hopeful and strong promise. Nneka sounds emotional, yet dead serious.

This is the video for The uncomfortable truth
